How to Stay Active & Healthy While on Vacation – By Stefanie Rousselle

s rouselle blogThe time of the year has arrived where we are trying to get our bikini bodies in time for the summer months. Ironically, this is also the time when many of us go on vacation. We all know what happens when you go on vacation… You probably eat more carbohydrates, drink more alcohol/sugar-based drinks, and exercise less than you normally would. Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

I often get asked by my patients & clients, “Do you actually exercise when you go on vacation?” My response is always, “Of course I do!”

Here are some of my tips & tricks to stay healthy & active while traveling and on vacation.

1.) Wake up early and immediately go for a jog/walk.

If you wake up and the first thing you do is lace up your sneakers, you can get a workout in before your significant other/friends even wake up. I try to log anywhere from 3-5 miles in the morning every other day while on vacation. This is perfect way to rev your metabolism first thing in the morning so you can eat what you want the rest of the day, and not feel as guilty. Also, this is a great way to explore the place you are vacationing. You can be the first one up to scope out a breakfast spot, a great beach to lay out at, or an awesome place to get drinks later. You will also learn your way around better on foot than in a car.

2.) Drink 2 glasses of water every time you order an alcoholic/sugar-based drink.

Usually when you go on vacation, it tends to be somewhere warmer than where you live. Therefore, we tend to get dehydrated much faster. I try to drink 2 waters (8 oz.) each time I drink any type of beverage. This includes coffee, tea, juice, beer, wine, or hard alcohol. This way, you stay hydrated and also do not over eat. When we feel hungry, it usually means you are thirsty. Therefore, try drinking 2 glasses of water with every drink while away from home.

3.) Try doing exercises or doing yoga outside.

Instead of hitting the gym, try exercising outside for a change. You can do yoga on a beach or on top of a mountain after hiking up it. This is a fun and creative way to stay active and for while enjoying the outdoors. You could also go for a walk then stop at a bench and do some push-ups, Tricep dips, squats, and lunges. Then continue with your walk or hike and stop a little later and do other body weight exercises outside.

Try these tips and tricks while away on vacation and see the positive results.
