How to Make New Year’s Resolutions That You Will Actually Keep

Health Yoga Life Coach Aida Bielkus PhD, ERYT has got some great tips on how to you keep your New Year’s Resolutions this year! Usually we create resolutions from a place in our hearts that is unsatisfied, starting from such a low, we are dooming ourselves to fail. And, when we do fail, we validate the negative thoughts we have about ourselves and keep them going throughout the year. Stop the madness! By creating your resolutions from a foundation of gratitude and using these 5 tips you will not only achieve your resolutions, they will become of a part of who you are.

  1. KEEP THEM SMALL  One way to ensure that you keep your resolutions this year is to make them small in the first place. For example, instead of resolving that you will go to the gym every day after work, choose a more attainable goal. Resolve to go to the gym three days a week!
  1. SCHEDULE THEM  Schedule the “how to” in your phone calendar. I don’t know about you, but if something is not in my calendar, I will miss it! Plan and every day write in your calendar what you will need to do in order to achieve your New Year’s Goals! This may require research, details, and making appointments with people that will help you achieve your objectives. Be specific, even write in the time of day you will take necessary action.
  1. HAVE THEM COME FROM THE HEART  Allow the resolution to come from your heart. Do a body scan. It must feel good at the body level. The body never lies. So, for example your resolution might be, “I am going to lose 20 pounds this year.” Close your eyes notice how you feel in your body when you repeat this to yourself quietly. If your body tenses, if your gut clenches, if your heart feels constricted, if you have trouble breathing, these are all signs that the choice is going to back-fire. It already does not feel good at the body level. A more achievable resolution that would feel good at the body level might be, “I am going to form a relationship with a coach or therapist this year.”
  1. BE YOURSELF  Be yourself. As you create your resolutions this year, let them come from you, not what your partner, your family or society deems as important. Meditate on what you need! The answers may surprise you, it may boil down to giving yourself some well-deserved self-care. “I resolve to get a massage, once a month.” How about that!
    1. WRITE THEM OUT  Write it out. Yes, write the resolution and put it up on your fridge. Sure, that’s easy. Keep a journal.  What are some things that will get in the way of you achieving your goal? What will it feel like to be accomplishing it? Why do you intend to commit to this resolution? What are the outcomes? How will you feel after it is done? Writing out all the juicy details will bring your resolution to life!
