National Yoga Month: Bring a Friend for Free!

“The success of Yoga does not lie in the ability to perform postures but in how it positively changes the way we live our life and our relationships.” -T.K.V. Desikachar

It’s time to come back to your mat, yogi. You’ve been busy over the summer traveling, enjoying the beautiful weather, meeting with friends, visiting family. It’s been amazing, but now it’s time.

Time to come back to yourself, your body, and your practice. On your mat, you become clear about everything from your schedule to your relationships. When you practice, you feel calmer, more level-headed, more connected, fulfilled, joyful, and grateful.

As most of us settle into the fall, our schedules and priorities shift. We may be more settled in our home lives, but business, school, events all come back into full swing when the autumn arrives.

It seems so counter-intuitive, but when you feel super busy and like you’re being pulled in a million different directions, the absolute best thing you can do is give yourself some time to reconnect with your heart, body, and soul on your mat.

Plus, as the weather cools, the juicy heat and humidity of the studio feel soooooooooo freaking good. You KNOW you agree with us, yogi!

In that spirit, Health Yoga Life is giving you the chance to also share this practice that has been so transformative for you with someone important to you.

For the rest of September, in honor of the changing season, National Yoga Month, and simply because we love you, you can BRING A FRIEND FOR FREE to our Cambridge or Boston Yoga Studios.

The details: your friend needs to be new to our studio and the offer is only good one time per person. Share the love. You know yoga changes everything. Bringing your friend to yoga is a really nourishing alternative to happy hour or a great way to start your day. You may even change their life.

Connection! Time to build community!

Boston HYL yoga teacher training

What I know for sure is that teaching yoga is a practice of stepping out of the narrow-centered self into a space that is expansive, empathetic and of being of service.  The world we live in today often can feel isolating.  There is a feeling of “one most go at it alone”.  Face to face contact is replaced more and more by face to screen contact.  We also seem to live with more fear of each other, fear that someone knows more than me, someone is better than me, someone is not willing to help me.  Think about it.  How many times do you actually make any kind of attempt to reach out to a stranger?  Do you even say hello, or even smile, to people anymore?

When I think about this, I think of all the lost opportunity to experience our human interconnectedness.  I think of all the missed chances to grow compassion for others.  And growing in compassion is the way toward more enlightenment, according to the Dalai Lama (who obviously knows a thing or two about the topic!).

Take a moment and consider how could you experience more compassion for others and express it.  How could you be more present and connected to everyone (not just those closest to you) in your community? How could you grow in your expression of together rather than alone?

Early bird is on! But ending soon!

One way to do this is to share what you love!  Join our fall teacher training and get schooled in all things yoga! Like I said stated above, teaching yoga gives you the opportunity to share of yourself with others in a meaningful way!

Don’t worry if you need to miss a day or weekend. We work with you to make up the time.

Go for your choices!

When we desire a change in our life, we need to realize that goals are only part of it.  The real change happens from our choices.  Life is a series of choices.  Whatever you are choosing is what your life becomes. Your choices produce outcomes that bring about your current experience of your body, your mood, your energy, your spirit, etc.

HYL yoga teacher training

Here’s a list of some of the choices I have made along the way that I can honestly say changed my life.

  1. Trying yoga for the first time (I still remember my very first class)
  2. Committing to my self-growth with 1:1 HYL Coaching. There is a way out of feeling stuck.
  3. Giving up Diet Coke, processed foods, and junk. Food is fuel.
  4. Starting a company with powerhouse females (my 3 sisters and mom)
  5. Meditating every day.
  6. Ditching the confines of what I thought my profession should look like.
  7. Letting go of my fear that certain things aren’t for me

Explore your choices.  What are you choosing now that is or isn’t supporting the life you truly want?

If you want a deeper connection to knowing yourself, your body and shaping your daily choices, consider the Health Yoga Life Yoga Teacher Training.

HYL Sister Review-Sipping in Ease for Mind, Body & Spirit! Yogi Tea!

I have enjoyed Yogi Teas for many years now. Inspired in the sixties by Kundalini Yoga Teacher Yogi Bhajan and Ayurveda, these teas are now  part of the East West Tea Company.  There are many delicious flavors to choose, that sometimes it’s hard to pick. These teas are more than delicious; they are healing. Ayurveda is the world’s oldest holistic healing systems and the tea formulas use specific herbs for specific healing properties. The range of teas include Bedtime, Detox, Calming, Immune Support, Breathe Better and others that take aim at your specific mind, body, & spirit needs.

My favorite of the moment is The Honey Lavender Stress Relief. It is particularly delightful. The ingredients include lemon balm, passion flower, chamomile, lavender, honey and spearmint. The combination is just right. There is a bit of sweet honey sensation, but not too much. The aroma of lavender is gentle and calming. The formula relaxes my whole system from the inside out and the outside in.

As a Health Yoga Life coach and yoga teacher I am often asked about how to break unhealthy habits and many of my clients are eager to reduce their stress. To reduce stress, often we need to work on removing things from our lives that are causing stress or change our relationship to those things. Sometimes we need to add things to our lives, new habits to replace old negative ones. Sipping on a Yogi Tea could be a new healthy habit you add to your life. In coaching others, I teach my clients about self-care and the importance of taking a few moments for the self every day. What could be better and more convenient than sitting down and allowing yourself to hold a warm cup of tea? It warms your hands, provides a gentle soothing aroma, and allows your entire system to take a brief reprieve. Yogi Teas also have a little inspiration on every tea bag, which makes the mind reflective toward positivity even for a brief moment.

This tea does calm my nerves (body). It does release negative thoughts (mind). It does give me time to be with myself and rest (spirit). Are these big claims? Yes, they are. However ultimately it is bringing me to the present moment. And as we yogis know it is about enjoying the present moment and the journey, not about the achievement that brings a sense of ease.

The Power of a Yoga Retreat!

I have been a fortunate soul when it comes to travel. I have been to beautiful places around the world and often through my work with yoga. This past week I was reminded about just how powerful a retreat can be for aligning with yourself and resetting your life. There is nothing like taking time for yourself in a healthy way to clear the debris from your mind and the stress from your shoulders.

On my recent journey, I tried surfing for the first time in my life. I signed up for a class thinking for sure I would hate it and ended up finding a new passion. As I thought about this experience, I realized this feeling I had was very similar to when I went away on my first yoga retreat at the age of 25. Before signing up for the retreat, I had a lot of trepidation-would I like it? would this be a waste of money? will I be the only one by myself? will I regret it?

Then on the retreat, when I had the opportunity to connect deeply with myself, it set my life in motion in a way I never would have predicted. I found courage to honor myself and started to trust that if I honored my authentic self, I would be happy (even if life wasn’t perfect all the time). I came back and started to take real steps toward more health and professional satisfaction, which I knew did not have to be mutually exclusive.

There are so many barriers, real or perceived, that keep us from doing something we want to do -too much work, too little money, too many family responsibilities, this isn’t for me, I’ll be the only one by myself, I’ll be the only guy, I will regret it, someone will be mad at me if I do this, and on and on and on. What I invite you to see is that these barriers are illusions that keep us stuck right where we are. If I listened to the lie I was telling myself, “you aren’t a good enough swimmer, don’t try surfing”, I would have never discovered this new passion.

If you want something to change, if you want more happiness, health, freedom, success you need to do something to honor your spirit. You need to make the time to get to know the real you, the one without the stopping energy. This is the power a retreat can have! A retreat is one of the best ways to do that-to take the time to actually be with yourself, so you begin to peel off the stuck and step into the flow!

Mostly Live!

“There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow. So today is the right day to love, believe, and mostly live!”-Dalai Lama

2dl

As the year begins, why not decide that this is the year to be present. Action happens in the now.   You can’t act in the past or act in the future. As you act in the present life moves forward, there is energy!  Yoga, meditation and HYL coaching are tools that can help you learn to build resolve to stay present in body and mind.  Only the negative mind takes you to the past or the future where the old records of limiting beliefs play: “I couldn’t” “I’m not worthy” “I am afraid”!  In the present you are whole, capable and ready.  This allows you to make choices that align with your true self.

Yoga teacher training is an amazing opportunity for growth and transformation. Do you love yoga? Do you want to learn more about this amazing philosophy and practice? Ready to empower your true self, gain confidence, build community, and strengthen your body?

Three Quick Tips to Boost Immunity! #WellthyWednesday

We know this time of year can be crazy hectic. Parties, shopping, keeping healthy and fit, weather changes, end of year work projects…the list continues! It’s easy for stress to pile up and to start to feel rundown. Luckily there are strategies that can really help keep the immunity up.

Here are three quick tips to consider:

1. Keep unrolling your mat! Sometimes yoga is the first thing to get sacrificed when the demands on our time increase. STOP! UNROLL! GET ON YOUR MAT! Consistent yoga practices decreases stress and immunity. Studies have shown that people who practice yoga regularly are less likely to get the flu or catch a cold.

2. Pop a probiotic! Gut health is critical to overall health. Different foods/beverages, weather changes, and stress can contribute to the flora in the gut being compromised. So if probiotics aren’t a daily habit yet, you might consider a month trial in December. See how you feel. Gut health is even connected to our mental health. Probiotics have been shown to help ease stress and anxiety. All kinds of foods have good probiotics including yogurt (just go for the plain stuff and add a drop of maple syrup or berries as most yogurts are loaded with sugar) and fermented foods like sauerkraut and kombucha!

3. Go Green! Increase your daily raw green leafy vegetable intake. You know the ones: kale, romaine, parsley, chard, dandelion greens, collard greens. Indulged a little too much? You need to hydrate and raw green vegetables are loaded with WATER! Look for or make juices with primarily green leafy vegetables and start to replace fruits, like apple and pear, with lime and ginger (both great immune boosters that enhance the taste of the juice but without the added carbs from the fruit.
