Tips for Exploring the Outdoors Safely

As the weather makes the turn from spring to summer, we all like to spend more time in the fresh air. Here are some tips for exploring the outdoors safely, for you and your family.

Sunscreen

We all know we need to wear sunscreen every day, and with so many options, from sprays to mineral sunscreens, it’s never been easier to remember to put it on. You should choose a sunscreen that has an SPF of at least 30, reapply every two hours, or after a sweat or swimming session. When it comes to sunscreen, more is better than less. Don’t forget areas like the back of your neck, the tops of your feet and ears, and the backs of your legs. Use a hat to protect your scalp from the rays as well.

Tick prevention

Ticks are a huge concern for both humans and animals alike. Depending on where you live, you can expect ticks all year round, but the safety tips remain the same. Take care when exploring wooded or grassy areas or gardens. You can buy tick sprays, or wear treated clothing. You might want to consider long pants, and shoes that cover your feet. Pulling your socks over the cuff of your pants can be a great tip. After you’ve been outside, it’s important to do a tick check for yourself, your kids, and your pets. For humans, pay special attention to the armpits, back of knees, around the waist and belly button, between the legs, behind the ears, and in and around your hair. If you do find a tick, removing it can be tricky. Read this post for tips before attempting.

Hiking Safety

Hiking is a fun and family friendly activity, but there are a number of tips you should keep in mind. You should pick a trail that matches the abilities of your group. Always leave a trip itinerary, and be sure to have an emergency plan. Even if you’ve done the same trail dozens of times, always be aware. A good hiker is always vigilant. Be conscious of the weather and have supplies in case of a change. You’ll also want to make sure you have a fully charged cell phone but be aware that cell phones are not always reliable. Make sure to have a back-up plan to keep yourself, and anyone who is with you, safe. Have the essentials in your pack like snacks, bug spray, water, and remember to wear proper shoes. Take frequent breaks, and always, always stay on the marked trail.

Swimming Safety

Going to the beach or a lake or lounging in the pool is the perfect way to beat the heat in the summer. To make sure everyone has a good time, there are lots of tips to keep in mind. Firstly, it’s best to swim in areas that have a trained lifeguard, and never swim alone. Keep an eye on children, especially. Life jackets are a great tool, but don’t rely on them. Stay close to anyone who’s an inexperienced swimmer. If you have a pool, have proper barriers in place. Make sure that everyone is accounted for when swimming time is over. A swim class is a great activity for the whole family, and a great way for everyone to learn water safety.
